about us

Our Heritage

Bonnza's story is one of enduring legacy and steadfast commitment to the land. It all began in the early 20th century when PJ Vermeulen and Maria Vermeulen embarked on their farming journey on the Bonnza farm, which they inherited from PJ's aunt.

In 1924, with humble beginnings and limited resources, PJ Vermeulen made his first significant purchase of land adjacent to Bonnza, walking miles to inspect the property. This marked the genesis of what would become the Bonnza legacy, rooted in resilience and a deep connection to the Karoo landscape.

As the years unfolded, PJ and Maria's dedication bore fruit, raising their family of three daughters and a son amidst the challenges and triumphs of farm life. Their commitment to sustainable practices and ethical farming set the stage for the generations to come.

In the 1960s, their son, FA Vermeulen, took the reins of Bonnza, facing his own trials, including a severe drought that tested the resilience of the land and its stewards. With his wife Bettie by his side, FA persevered, instilling in their sons the values of integrity, hard work and a profound respect for nature.

The 1980s marked a new chapter for Bonnza as Charl, Floris, and Johan Vermeulen, the third generation, joined the business. Embracing innovation and modern farming techniques, they propelled Bonnza into a new era of growth and sustainability. It was during this period that Bonnza transitioned into a company, reflecting its evolution and vision for the future.

In 2022 FA Vermeulen Jnr joined Bonnza as the fourth generation of the family to take the business forward. We remain committed to preserving our heritage while embracing the latest advancements in agriculture. Our dedication to sustainable practices, ethical farming, and producing premium quality products is unwavering.

Join us as we continue to write the next chapter of the Bonnza story, honoring our past, embracing the present, and shaping the future of farming in the Karoo.
